JPJ to Intensify Enforcement During the Chinese New Year Period
(Kuala Lumpur, Feb 4) — The Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) will carry out a special enforcement operation during the Chinese New Year holiday period targeting heavy vehicles, particularly long-distance express buses travelling more than 300 kilometres, to ensure that buses are equipped with a second driver.
Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said the operation will also focus on checking drivers’ licences, compliance with driving hour limits, vehicle conditions, and adherence to the requirement of having a second driver to mitigate fatigue-related driving risks.
“This operation will also cover passenger safety requirements to ensure the safety of all road users during the festive period,” he said in a telephone interview with The Star.
Hamidi explained that the special operation aims to enhance road safety and ensure smooth traffic flow during the holiday season.
“The measures include restricting the movement of heavy vehicles during certain periods, conducting technical inspections, and taking strict action against drivers and vehicles that violate road traffic regulations,” he said.
He added that enforcement agencies will work closely with relevant authorities to implement coordinated measures to reduce road accidents and traffic congestion during the festive period.
“We are committed to conducting enforcement operations throughout the year. However, during festive seasons — especially the upcoming Chinese New Year — we will further intensify enforcement efforts,” he said.
Hamidi noted that the Kuala Lumpur JPJ issued a total of 137,192 summonses last year and impounded 955 vehicles. This represents a slight decrease compared with the 145,542 summonses issued in 2024.
He said the most common offences recorded last year included expired driving licences, expired road tax, and failure to maintain valid vehicle insurance.
“We also detected vehicles with window tinting that did not comply with regulations, as well as cases involving overloaded heavy vehicles,” he added.
Hamidi advised road users to ensure that their driving licences, road tax, and vehicle insurance remain valid at all times.
