To save electricity on an Air Handling Unit (AHU) in 2026, you must align your technical upgrades with Malaysia's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2024, which became fully enforceable on January 1, 2025.

Large energy consumers (using >21,600 GJ annually) are now legally required to appoint a Registered Energy Manager (REM) and implement an Energy Management System (EnMS). For an AHU, this involves moving beyond simple maintenance toward "smart" and "statutory" optimization.

• Automated Demand Control Ventilation (DCV):

Your energy-saving measures must comply with the latest Malaysian standards to pass a BOMBA or Energy Commission (ST) audit.

• MS 1525:2024:

  Ensure your AHU meets the Specific Fan Power (SFP) limit of 1.6 kW per m³/s. Modern energy-saving units often achieve 1.0–1.2 kW/m³/s.

   

• The "Fire Mode" Override:

  Any VFD or speed-control device must be hard-wired to the Fire Alarm Monitoring System (FAMS). During a fire, the energy-saving logic must be bypassed to either shut down the unit or ramp it to 100% for smoke spill purposes.

• Digital Twin Logging:

  EECA 2024 requires that your energy data be logged. Use a BMS (Building Management System) with BACnet/IP to track real-time kW usage for your annual REM report.

4. Critical Maintenance for Efficiency

Before spending on new hardware, ensure the "passive" elements of the AHU are optimized:

1. Pressure Drop Management: Change filters when they hit their pressure threshold (typically 200–250 Pa) to stop the fan from working harder than necessary.

2. Coil Cleaning: Biofilm on cooling coils acts as an insulator, forcing the chiller to work harder. Annual chemical cleaning can improve heat transfer efficiency by 10–15%.

3. Leakage Audits: Inspect ductwork for air leaks; a 10% leak in the supply duct requires the fan to run significantly faster to maintain zone pressure.
