A Guide to Mandatory Blood Tests in Early Pregnancy
You just tested positive, went to the clinic for your first visit, and the doctor ordered a stack of lab tests? Watching the nurse draw tube after tube of blood can be scary for new moms: "Why do I need so many tests? Is something wrong?"
Don't worry! This is to build a comprehensive "Health Profile" for you and your baby. Newparents explains the mandatory tests done during your First Booking Visit.
1. Pregnancy Hormones (HCG & Progesterone)
These are the baseline checks (usually weeks 6-8) to ensure the pregnancy is stable.
- Beta-HCG: Confirms pregnancy. Doctors look for the "doubling" of this number every 48 hours to ensure the embryo is growing normally.
- Progesterone: The "pregnancy support hormone." If levels are too low, your doctor might prescribe supplements (Duphaston) to prevent miscarriage.
2. Full Blood Count (Mom's Health Baseline)
Essential for opening your "Pink Book" (Buku Merah) records.
- Blood Group & Rh Factor: Critical! If you are Rh-Negative (O- or A-), you will need special injections (Anti-D) during pregnancy to prevent your body from rejecting the baby's blood.
- Hemoglobin (Hb): To check for Anemia (low iron). It's very common in pregnancy and needs to be treated early.
- Thalassemia Screening: A genetic blood disorder very common in Malaysia. Both parents need to be screened to assess risk for the baby.
3. Infectious Diseases Screening
To protect the baby from viruses that can cross the placenta.
- Hepatitis B: If mom is a carrier, the baby needs a specific vaccine and immunoglobulin shot immediately after birth.
- Rubella (German Measles): Infection in early pregnancy can cause birth defects.
- Syphilis & HIV: Early detection allows for medical intervention to prevent passing the virus to the baby.
4. Optional Advanced Check: NIPT / NIFTY
Not mandatory, but highly recommended if you have the budget (usually after Week 10).
- By drawing mom's blood, this DNA test screens for chromosomal abnormalities like Down Syndrome with 99% accuracy. Plus, you can find out the Gender early!
