PROTON Starts 2026 Strong With Record Monthly Sales

PROTON kicked off 2026 with its best monthly sales performance in 15 years, underscoring strong momentum after a solid finish to 2025. The national carmaker delivered 19,833 vehicles in January, marking a 35.3% increase from December 2025 and a 100% year-on-year jump compared with the 9,918 units sold in January last year.

The performance came amid improving industry conditions. Total Industry Volume (TIV) is estimated to have grown 28.3% year-on-year, although it declined by around 28.6% from December’s record levels. Based on preliminary figures, PROTON captured an estimated 30.6% market share, its highest since January 2012, strengthening confidence in the company’s target to sell 200,000 units in 2026.

Growth in January was led by the 2026 Proton Saga, which posted its best-ever monthly sales. The model recorded 10,285 units sold during the month, pushing cumulative deliveries to more than 19,000 units since its launch on 27 November 2025. With nearly 100,000 bookings already secured, the Saga is expected to remain PROTON’s primary volume driver in the months ahead.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa said the Saga’s performance reflects its broad appeal among Malaysian buyers, noting that few automotive models worldwide remain in continuous production for over 40 years while still achieving record sales. He added that the model’s Brunei launch in February and a phased expansion into other export markets are expected to further support demand.

Beyond the Saga, PROTON’s wider lineup also recorded strong year-on-year growth. The Proton X50 sold 2,429 units, representing a 69.3% increase, while the Proton X70 delivered 672 units, up 16.5% from the same period last year. The Proton S70 achieved its best monthly performance since May 2025, with 1,604 units sold, a 40.3% improvement, while sales of the flagship Proton X90 rose to 252 units, reflecting a 24.1% increase.

According to Abdul Rashid Musa, PROTON’s strong start to the year highlights growing customer acceptance of its refreshed ICE and EV model lineup. He said the company will continue to expand local production capabilities and strengthen its market presence to deliver competitively priced vehicles equipped with advanced technologies throughout 2026.
