L-Vision was engaged by a leading chemical solvent distributor in the ASEAN region to trace their existing tank system, develop updated P&ID drawings and conduct a full integrity assessment of four chemical storage tanks and the connecting piping network.

The project involved process design verification, a structured HAZOP review and a complete API 653 and API 570 inspection programme. Through this combined engineering and inspection approach, the client gained accurate insights into asset condition, maintenance priorities and lifecycle planning.

Scope of Work

1. P&ID Tracing and Development

Our engineering team carried out a detailed field verification of all tanks, piping lines, nozzles and tie ins. Each component was cross checked against actual installed conditions to produce accurate and reliable P&ID drawings.

The updated P&IDs provided:

  • Clear identification of tanks, piping routes and critical nozzles
  • Updated line numbers, sizes, materials and service descriptions
  • Current instrumentation layout for level, pressure and safety interlocks
  • Better visibility for maintenance, inspection planning and future upgrades
  • A reliable and accurate reference for the HAZOP and Remaining Life Assessment

For clients who require new or revised process drawings, our plant engineering design services cover PFD and P&ID development for greenfield and brownfield projects.

2. HAZOP Facilitation

L-Vision facilitated a structured HAZOP session to identify process risks and evaluate existing safeguards. The review focused on tank operations, transfer lines, potential deviations and process upsets that could impact safety or environmental compliance. All findings were documented with clear recommendations and action tracking.

The updated P&IDs ensured that every discussion during the HAZOP sessions was based on accurate field conditions, improving the quality of decisions on safeguards and action items.

3. API 653 Tank Inspection

The tank integrity review followed API 653 requirements and included a comprehensive range of non destructive testing. API 653 is the key industry standard for the inspection, repair, alteration and reconstruction of aboveground storage tanks.

  • API 653 external inspection
  • UTG on shell courses
  • PAUT and UTG on 5 T joints
  • UTG on roof plates
  • UTG on all tank nozzles
  • MT or ECT on shell to bottom plate welds

These tests allowed accurate identification of corrosion, thinning, weld defects and structural concerns, and formed the basis for the Remaining Life Assessment.

4. API 570 Inspection for Connecting Piping

The connecting piping system was evaluated using API 570 guidelines to determine its condition and remaining service life. API 570 focuses on the in service inspection, rating, repair and alteration of metallic piping systems and associated components.

  • API 570 external inspection
  • UTG thickness measurements at accessible points
  • UTG profiling for inaccessible or critical sections
  • MT or ECT on selected piping weldments
  • Fitness for service evaluation of the inspected lines

5. Remaining Life Assessment

Remaining Life Assessment was performed for both tanks and piping. Corrosion rates, material conditions and structural integrity were analysed to determine the safe operating life of each component. Repair or replacement recommendations were prioritised to support long term reliability and budget planning.

6. PE Endorsed Reporting

All reports, inspection findings and engineering assessments were endorsed by a Professional Engineer to support regulatory compliance and maintenance planning within the chemical plant.

Engineering Deliverables

  • Updated and verified P&ID drawings
  • HAZOP worksheets, recommendations and risk ranking
  • API 653 tank inspection reports
  • API 570 piping inspection reports
  • Remaining Life Assessment and repair prioritisation
  • PE endorsed engineering and inspection reports

Project Outcome

L-Vision delivered a clear and structured assessment that allowed the client to understand the true condition of their tanks and piping system. The findings helped prioritise repair works, strengthen process safety and support long term asset management.

This project highlights L Vision's capability in inspection engineering, asset integrity management and process safety within the chemical industry. Our team combines practical field experience with strong engineering expertise to deliver safe, accurate and actionable results.
