Vosmaeri Eclectus are considered the largest and most visually distinct subspecies.
Size: 38–42 cm (15–16.5 in).
Weight: 430–600 g.
Males:
Bright emerald-green plumage.
Blue-tinted primaries (wing feathers).
Bright orange upper beak, black lower beak.
Females:
Scarlet head, chest, and belly.
Lavender to violet chest band (brighter than other subspecies).
Yellow tail with orange edging (unique to Vosmaeri).
Black beak.
Sexual Dimorphism: Very strong → males and females look completely different, making this species famous for being among the most visually dimorphic parrots.
Clutch Size: 2 eggs (sometimes 1–3).
Incubation: ~28–30 days (female incubates).
Fledging: ~11–12 weeks.
Lifespan: 30–40 years (sometimes longer in captivity).
Calm and gentle compared to many parrots.
Intelligent, observant, and can learn to mimic speech (not as talkative as African Greys, but clear).
Males often more easygoing; females may be territorial, especially around nest-like spaces.
Need consistent handling to remain social.
Prefer routine—sudden changes can stress them.
Housing: Large cage/aviary (minimum 36" x 28" x 48", bigger is better). Need vertical climbing space.
Diet (very specific):
Eclectus have a long digestive tract → they need a high-fiber, low-fat, fresh food–based diet.
Fresh fruits: papaya, mango, pomegranate, berries, apple.
Vegetables: leafy greens, carrots, squash, corn, peppers.
Avoid seed-heavy or pellet-only diets → can cause “toe-tapping” and feather problems.
Enrichment: Foraging toys, climbing ropes, wooden chew toys.
Bathing: Enjoy misting or shallow baths several times a week.
