Nippon Paint 9000 Speed Undercoat is a high-performance, quick-drying alkyd-based undercoat specifically engineered for projects requiring a fast turnaround.
Designed for use on both wood and metal surfaces, 9000 Speed Undercoat is the ideal companion for the Nippon 9000 Gloss Finish series.
Product Type: Single-pack, solvent-based fast-dry alkyd.
Color: White (Matte finish).
Specific Gravity: 1.40 – 1.50 kg/litre.
Solid Content: Approximately 72% by weight (48% by volume).
Drying Time (at 30°C):
Touch Dry: 30 minutes (extremely fast-set).
Hard Dry: 3 hours.
Theoretical Coverage: 10 – 12 m² per litre (at 35–40 microns Dry Film Thickness).
Overcoating Interval: Minimum 3 hours (allows for same-day topcoating).
Preparation: Stir the paint thoroughly before use. This high-solids formula requires good agitation to ensure uniform density and opacity.
Application Methods:
Brush/Roller: Apply an even, generous coat. Thinning is generally unnecessary, but you may add up to 5% Nippon General Purpose Thinner for better flow on hot surfaces.
Conventional Air Spray: Thin with 10–20% General Purpose Thinner for a fine, atomized finish.
Sanding: Once hard dry (approx. 3 hours), the surface can be lightly dry-sanded with fine-grit sandpaper (P400) to achieve an ultra-smooth profile before the final gloss coat.
For Wood Surfaces:
Primer: 1 coat of Nippon 9000 Aluminium Wood Primer.
Undercoat: 1 coat of Nippon 9000 Speed Undercoat.
Topcoat: 2 coats of Nippon 9000 Gloss Finish.
For Ferrous Metal Surfaces:
Primer: 1 coat of Nippon Red Oxide Primer or Zinc Phosphate Primer.
Undercoat: 1 coat of Nippon 9000 Speed Undercoat.
Topcoat: 2 coats of Nippon 9000 Gloss Finish.
Surface Cleaning: The substrate must be completely dry and free from all contaminants including grease, oil, dirt, and wax. Use a solvent wipe for oily residues.
Wood Substrates: Sand the wood surface along the grain to remove loose fibers. Ensure the moisture content of the wood is below 12% before application.
Metal Substrates: Remove all rust, mill scale, and old flaking paint using wire brushing or power tool cleaning to a minimum St 2 standard.
Existing Paint: For previously painted surfaces that are stable, lightly abrade the old gloss finish to create a "key" for the undercoat to bond to.
Environment: Do not apply the undercoat if the relative humidity is above 85% or if the surface temperature is less than 3°C above the dew point.
