Nippon Paint Odourlite Undercoat is a premium, low-odour alkyd-based undercoat specifically designed to provide a smooth and solid foundation for subsequent topcoats.
Ideal for use on both wood and metal surfaces, Odourlite Undercoat is the perfect partner for the Nippon Odourlite Gloss or Soft Gloss series.
Product Type: Single-pack solvent-based low-odour alkyd.
Color: White (Matte finish).
Specific Gravity: 1.45 – 1.55 kg/litre.
Solid Content: Approximately 74% by weight (50% by volume).
Drying Time (at 30°C):
Touch Dry: 2 hours.
Hard Dry: 8 hours.
Theoretical Coverage: 10 – 12 m² per litre (at 35–40 microns Dry Film Thickness).
Overcoating Interval: Minimum 8 hours under normal conditions.
Mixing: Stir the paint thoroughly before use to ensure a consistent density. Since it is a high-build undercoat, settling of solids is normal and requires proper agitation.
Application Methods:
Brush/Roller: Apply an even coat. Thinning is generally not required for brush application but can be thinned up to 5% with Nippon Odourlite Thinner for better flow.
Conventional Air Spray: Thin with 10–15% Nippon Odourlite Thinner for optimal atomization.
Environmental Conditions: Ensure the area is well-ventilated during application and drying, despite the low-odour formulation.
For Wood Surfaces:
Primer: 1 coat of Nippon 9000 Aluminium Wood Primer.
Undercoat: 1 coat of Nippon Odourlite Undercoat.
Topcoat: 2 coats of Nippon Odourlite Gloss or Soft Gloss.
For Ferrous Metal Surfaces:
Primer: 1 coat of Nippon Red Oxide Primer or Zinc Phosphate Primer.
Undercoat: 1 coat of Nippon Odourlite Undercoat.
Topcoat: 2 coats of Nippon Odourlite Gloss.
Cleaning: Surface must be dry and free from dirt, grease, oil, and other contaminants. For oily surfaces, use a solvent-wipe method.
Wood Prep: Sand the wood surface along the grain using suitable sandpaper (P240-P320) to remove fibers and create a smooth profile. Dust off completely.
Metal Prep: Ensure all rust, mill scale, and loose paint are removed via wire brushing or sanding to a minimum St 2 standard before priming.
Moisture Content: Ensure wood moisture content is below 12% and the surface is free from any condensation before application.
Previous Coatings: For previously painted surfaces in good condition, lightly abrade the old paint with fine sandpaper to improve the mechanical bond for the undercoat.
