Hazardous Area Ventilation by EKG M&E Sdn Bhd

In the industrial landscape of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, hazardous area ventilation is a critical safety infrastructure designed to prevent the accumulation of explosive gases, vapors, or combustible dust. Unlike standard HVAC, these systems are engineered to eliminate ignition risks while ensuring that contaminants are diluted or extracted before they reach the Lower Flammability Limit (LFL) or toxic thresholds.

EKG M&E Sdn Bhd specializes in the design, installation, and JKKP (DOSH) LEV certification of ventilation systems for high-risk zones, complying with MS IEC 60079, NFPA 91, and ASHRAE standards.

1. Zonal Ventilation Strategies

As an HVAC and Clean Air Specialist, we categorize ventilation requirements based on the Hazardous Area Classification (Zones) of your facility:

2. Dilution vs. Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)

We implement two primary methods to manage hazardous atmospheres:

A. Dilution Ventilation (General)

This method introduces a large volume of fresh air to "thin out" contaminants across the entire room.

B. Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)

This captures contaminants at the source (e.g., a mixing tank or a spray nozzle) before they enter the general workspace.

3. Engineering for Explosion Safety

Every component in a hazardous area ventilation system must be "Spark-Resistant" and "Flameproof":

Feature Standard Requirement EKG M&E Implementation
Fan Type AMCA Type A or B (Non-Sparking). Aluminum or Anti-Static Carbon Fiber blades.
Motor Ex d (Flameproof) or Ex e (Increased Safety). ATEX / IECEx / SIRIM Certified Motors.
Ducting Conductive/Grounded. Stainless Steel or Anti-Static PPS/FRP.
Control Interlocked with gas sensors. PLC-driven logic with VFD speed ramping.

4. VFD Integration and "Smart" Airflow

To prevent the high operational costs of constant 24/7 high-speed ventilation, we synchronize the system with Gas Detectors:

  1. Low Speed: Runs during normal operations to maintain air freshness.

  2. High Speed: Triggered automatically when gas sensors detect 10% LFL.

  3. Emergency Trip: If the exhaust fan fails or gas reaches 25% LFL, the system can automatically shut down the production process to stop the gas source.
