Kuala Lumpur | February 13, 2026 — EKG M&E Sdn Bhd continues to demonstrate its multi-disciplinary expertise with the successful completion of a comprehensive electrical system overhaul. This project focused on the high-level maintenance and modernization of critical switchgear components within a main distribution board, ensuring system safety, operational reliability, and improved energy efficiency through power factor correction.
Scope of Work: Component Replacement (Transformers, Contactors, Overloads) and Capacitor Bank Modernization
Electrical panels are the central nervous system of any facility. Over time, heavy-duty components can experience thermal fatigue and mechanical wear:
Control Transformers: Inconsistent voltage output was affecting the reliability of the control circuit.
Contactors & Overloads: Pitted contacts and aged thermal overload relays increased the risk of motor failure and electrical arcing.
Capacitor Banks: Degraded capacitors were resulting in poor power factor readings, leading to potential utility penalties (Reactive Power Charges) and increased heat within the panel.
Our electrical engineering team performed a systematic "strip-and-replace" procedure to restore the panel to its original design specifications:
Control Transformer Installation: Replaced aged transformers with high-efficiency units, ensuring a stable and isolated power supply for the panel’s logic and safety circuits.
Switchgear Modernization: Installed new, high-durability Contactors and Overload Relays. This prevents localized overheating and provides precise protection for the downstream motors and pumps.
Capacitor Bank Refurbishment: Replaced failing capacitor cells with new, high-specification units. This restoration is critical for maintaining a Power Factor (PF) close to unity (0.95–1.0), which optimizes the facility's electrical load and reduces current draw.
Testing & Validation:
Voltage Verification: Confirmed Phase-to-Phase Voltage stability (e.g., 415V/416V).
Amperage Audit: Verified that the amperage draw across all phases is balanced and within the rated limits of the new components.
Torque Testing: Every connection was checked for proper torque to prevent "hotspots" caused by loose wiring.
Improved System Stability: The new control components eliminate intermittent faults and ensure the mechanical equipment (pumps/HVAC) starts and stops reliably.
Energy Cost Reduction: By restoring the Capacitor Bank, the client will benefit from improved power factor, eliminating TNB/utility surcharges and reducing internal cable heat losses.
Enhanced Safety: Replacing aged overloads and contactors significantly reduces the risk of electrical fires and catastrophic component failure.
