Prostate Disorder Assessment & Treatment in Johor Bahru

Comprehensive Prostate Care by Dr Gan at Southern AlphaMen Clinic

Experiencing Frequent Urination or Difficulty Passing Urine?

Prostate disorders become increasingly common as men age and can significantly affect urinary function, sleep quality and overall well-being. Symptoms such as frequent urination, a weak urine stream or difficulty emptying the bladder should not be ignored, as they may indicate an underlying prostate condition.

At Southern AlphaMen Clinic, Dr Gan provides comprehensive assessment and personalised treatment for common prostate disorders, including Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, and the evaluation of symptoms that may require further investigation for prostate cancer.

Patients from Johor Bahru and Singapore are welcome for confidential consultations.

Common Prostate Disorders

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

BPH, also known as an enlarged prostate, is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly occurs with ageing. As the prostate enlarges, it may compress the urethra and interfere with normal urination.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis refers to inflammation or infection of the prostate gland. It may develop suddenly (acute prostatitis) or persist over time (chronic prostatitis), causing urinary symptoms, pelvic discomfort and pain.

Prostate Cancer Screening and Evaluation

While urinary symptoms are often caused by non-cancerous conditions such as BPH, they can occasionally be associated with prostate cancer. Early evaluation helps determine whether further investigations or referral are needed.

Southern AlphaMen Clinic provides assessment and screening, with referral to specialist urology services when appropriate.

Symptoms of Prostate Disorders

You should consider seeing a doctor if you experience:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia)
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Feeling that the bladder does not empty completely
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Pelvic, lower abdominal or perineal pain
  • Pain during ejaculation
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections

These symptoms may have different causes, making a proper medical assessment essential.

Diagnosis

Dr Gan will perform a comprehensive evaluation, which may include:

  • Medical history and symptom assessment
  • Physical examination
  • Digital rectal examination (DRE), when appropriate
  • Urine analysis
  • Urine culture (if infection is suspected)
  • Blood tests, including Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) where clinically indicated
  • Ultrasound or additional investigations when required
  • Referral for specialist imaging or biopsy if necessary

Not every patient requires all of these investigations. Testing is based on individual symptoms, age and clinical findings.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the specific prostate condition and its severity.

Lifestyle Advice

For mild urinary symptoms, simple measures such as reducing evening fluid intake, limiting caffeine and alcohol, and bladder training may help improve symptoms.

Medication

Prescription medication may be recommended to:

  • Relax the muscles around the prostate and bladder neck
  • Reduce prostate enlargement
  • Treat bacterial prostatitis
  • Relieve inflammation and associated symptoms

Treatment is tailored to each patient's diagnosis.

Chronic Prostatitis / Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CP/CPPS)

Selected patients with chronic pelvic pain syndrome may benefit from a combination of therapies, including medication, lifestyle modification and, in appropriate cases, Low-Intensity Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (Li-ESWT) using the Dornier Aries 2 SmartFocus system.

Treatment recommendations are based on individual assessment and current clinical evidence.

Specialist Referral

Patients with severe urinary obstruction, suspected prostate cancer or complex prostate disease may require referral to a urologist for further investigation or surgical management.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common prostate problem?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, is one of the most common prostate conditions in ageing men and can cause urinary symptoms.

Does frequent urination always mean an enlarged prostate?

No. Frequent urination may also result from urinary tract infections, diabetes, bladder conditions, prostatitis or other medical issues. A medical assessment is needed to identify the cause.

Is an enlarged prostate the same as prostate cancer?

No. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate and does not mean you have prostate cancer. However, both conditions can occur in older men, so evaluation is important.

What is a PSA test?

A Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test measures a protein produced by the prostate gland. PSA levels may be elevated due to BPH, prostatitis, prostate cancer or other benign conditions. The test is interpreted together with your symptoms, age and clinical findings.

Is prostatitis an infection?

Some forms of prostatitis are caused by bacterial infection, while others—such as Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CP/CPPS)—may occur without bacterial infection.

When should I see a doctor?

You should seek medical attention if you have persistent urinary symptoms, blood in the urine, fever with urinary symptoms, severe pelvic pain or difficulty passing urine.

Are all treatments performed by a doctor?

Yes. At Southern AlphaMen Clinic, all consultations, assessments and treatments are performed by certified doctors.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Yes. Walk-in patients are welcome, subject to doctor availability. However, appointments via WhatsApp or telephone are recommended to minimise waiting time.

Do you treat patients from Singapore?

Yes. Southern AlphaMen Clinic welcomes patients from Singapore seeking prostate health assessment and treatment.
