In the high-rise commercial and residential towers of KL and PJ, the lift lobby serves as a critical staging area for both evacuation and firefighting operations. EKG M&E Sdn Bhd specializes in Lift Lobby Smoke Pressurization, an engineering strategy that uses controlled air pressure to ensure these transition zones remain 100% free of toxic gases during a fire emergency.
Lift lobbies are often the link between the "Fire Zone" (offices or apartments) and the "Safe Zone" (stairwells). We utilize a "Pressure Gradient" to ensure smoke always moves away from people.
The 15 Pa Standard: According to BOMBA and UBBL standards, a protected lift lobby should maintain a positive pressure of approximately 15 Pa relative to the floor area. This is lower than the stairwell (50 Pa) but higher than the fire zone, creating a "step-down" pressure shield that prevents smoke infiltration.
Piston Effect Mitigation: When elevator cars move through a shaft, they create air turbulence known as the "Piston Effect," which can disturb smoke layers. Our pressurization fans are calibrated to overcome this turbulence, maintaining a stable air curtain even as lifts are homing to the ground floor.
Secondary Make-Up Air Logic: To maintain the pressure balance, our system is interlocked with the building's Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). If the pressure drops due to a door opening, the VFD ramps up the fan speed instantly to maintain the life-saving air barrier.
High-Static Axial Pressurization Fans: We install dedicated fans, often located on the rooftop or in a mechanical plant room, that pump fresh outdoor air through fire-rated ductwork into each lobby level.
Motorized Smoke Dampers & Relief Vents: To prevent "Over-Pressurization" (which would make doors impossible to open), we install pressure relief dampers. These modulate automatically to bleed off excess air, ensuring the door opening force remains below 110 N.
Fire-Rated Ducting (BS 476-24): Because these ducts pass through potential fire zones to deliver clean air, they are constructed from heavy-gauge steel and treated with intumescent coatings to survive 250°C for 2 hours.
| Parameter | UBBL / BOMBA Requirement | EKG M&E Standard |
| Lobby Pressure | Minimum 10 - 15 Pa. | 15 Pa (Stable Calibration). |
| Stairwell Pressure | Minimum 50 Pa. | 50 - 55 Pa (Shield Zone). |
| Door Opening Force | Max 110 N. | Tested with Digital Force Gauge. |
| Response Time | Activation < 60 Seconds. | High-Speed Sensor Integration. |
HVAC & Clean Air Specialist: We perform Differential Pressure Mapping across all floors. If your lobby is "leaking" pressure into the ceiling void, we identify the breach and perform M&E rectifications to ensure you pass your BOMBA audit.
Integrated Fire Logic: We ensure your lift lobby pressurization is perfectly timed with the "Fireman’s Lift" homing sequence. We provide the Testing & Commissioning (T&C) reports required for your annual Fire Certificate (FC) renewal.
Klang Valley Strategic Support: Based in Kuala Lumpur, we provide professional maintenance and pressure sensor calibration for Grade-A office towers and luxury residences across the Klang Valley.
