Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy (Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy – ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate tissue repair and reduce chronic pain. At SPMC Wellness, we use shockwave therapy to treat stubborn musculoskeletal conditions that haven’t responded to conventional care.

Shock waves are movements of extremely high pressure caused by, for example, an explosion, an earthquake, or a plane breaking the sound barrier.
These shock waves produce a rapid increase in blood circulation to the target area and help break down fibrous scar tissue. Scar tissue is non-elastic tissue that builds up over time and can limit movement and joint function, thereby weakening the surrounding healthy tissue.

Conditions Treated with Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  1. Feet – Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Spurs, Achilles Tendonitis

  2. Elbow – Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow

  3. Shoulder – Frozen Shoulder, Tendinitis of the rotator cuff muscles.

  4. Knee – Osteoarthritis, Patellar Tendonitis

  5. Hip – Bursitis

  6. Back Pain – Lumbar and Cervical Spine Regions and Chronic Muscular Pain

What to Expect During Shockwave Therapy Treatment

Research has compared the sensation of shockwave therapy to eating red chilli peppers. Initially, you may feel an intense sensation, followed by numbness.

During treatment, shock waves stimulate C nerve fibers, which are responsible for transmitting pain, causing them to release a substance known as substance P. With continued shockwave stimulation, these nerve fibers become less active and release lower levels of substance P, resulting in a significant reduction in pain.

Lower levels of substance P also reduce neurogenic inflammation and trigger the body’s natural healing response by activating stem cells in the targeted tissue.
