The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Penang has indicated that more individuals will be called to provide statements as part of the ongoing investigation into an alleged abuse of power by a senior state government official concerning a land acquisition funded through zakat (tithe) contributions.
Penang MACC director Datuk S Karunanithy told reporters on Sunday, during the Thaipusam celebrations at Jalan Kebun Bunga, that the agency is actively summoning additional parties to assist with the inquiry, but declined to provide further details, citing the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation.
The probe was initiated following disclosures by a state assemblyman during the Penang State Legislative Assembly late last year, concerning irregularities in the use of zakat funds for a land purchase.
MACC has reportedly already visited multiple offices to collect relevant documentation, which is under review, and has recorded statements from two individuals considered to be linked to the matter.
On January 31, the Penang state government confirmed that it would provide full cooperation and allow MACC to conduct its investigation independently. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasized that the state would neither interfere nor initiate a separate internal inquiry, ensuring that the commission can operate without obstruction.
Investigations of this nature reinforce the importance of transparent governance in land transactions, which is a critical factor for investor confidence, particularly in high-demand areas such as industrial land in Selangor, factory developments in Puchong, and industrial properties in the Subang area.
Similarly, the commercial and office property sectors in KL, including office space in Bukit Jalil, rely heavily on clear regulatory oversight to maintain market stability and attract long-term investment.
Maintaining accountability in public land dealings is essential to safeguard both industrial and commercial real estate values and uphold the credibility of Malaysia’s property market.
