Diploma in Media and Communications at PSB Academy is a 12-month on-campus diploma delivered in English at the Main campus — assessed through 100% coursework and online quizzes with no written examinations.

Gain practical learning with Adobe Premiere Pro, hands-on experience in TV & radio studios, and industry visits through IPRS student membership. Advance directly into Year 2 or Year 3 of a bachelor’s degree with university partners or receive module exemptions (subject to university’s approval).

UEC

Academic Reading and Writing 2
  • There has been a need to continually improve the English quality of our students and provide them constant support at their Diploma levels. The module is designed for students to work intensively on their reading and writing skills. This is a more intensive module that improves students reading and writing skills, as these are the keys to understanding their subjects and effectively engage in class activities. These classes will address a variety of key demands of writing and reading assignments on their courses, focusing on both academic and language skills and the ability to write. The module will be delivered in a blended-learning environment, where students will have the opportunity to experiment and learn via both online and face-to-face lessons.
Business Ethics
  • Ethics forms an important part of every long-term sustainable strategy for every business in the world. The module provides students with a deep knowledge of ethical principles and concepts and presents how students can apply their knowledge to manage ethical issues in the real world. Through a combination of exercises, case studies and video clips, this module encourages students to think through moral issues and understand the different perspectives of others who can resolve such issues in their own manner.
Management
  • This module is designed to develop students’ understanding of key management theories, concepts and issues affecting managers. Students will learn what is management, the value of studying management and key functions of a manager. The four key management functions  planning, organising, leading and controlling  are discussed in detail to provide students an overview of the activities performed by a typical manager. By studying management, students will gain insight into the way managers behave, how organisations function, the concepts that one can adopt and adapt to be an effective manager in practice.
Mass Communications
  • This module aims to help students increase their understanding and knowledge of the communication process and the mass media industries. It is also aimed at equipping them with the skills to become savvy media consumers, critical and analytical in their thinking and assessment of the media content. In this module, students will be introduced to communication theories, as well as the history, development and processes in mass communication. They will receive a broad overview of the key mass media industries, their operators and different forms of content in both traditional and new media.
Marketing Communications
  • The field of advertising and promotion continues to change the role of marketing communications in developing a company’s marketing strategy. Marketers must look beyond traditional forms of media in order to achieve success. In order to communicate with consumers and customers, advertisers must utilise the myriad of media outlets - print, radio, cable, satellite TV and the Internet to deliver a clear, consistent and compelling message to the organisation’s target consumers.
Principles of Journalism
  • Students will be exposed to the history and development of journalism. Aspects of the multi-lingual press and the press system, broadcast and electronic journalism, media as the Fourth Estate, ethics of journalism, and the journalism profession will be covered. Practical aspects will include the news gathering process, fundamentals of news writing, interviewing, news sources, copy editing, headline writing and layout. This module aims to make students critical consumers of the mass media, help them understand how news is produced and delivered, provide them with information about how news organisations work, give them an understanding about how audiences react to and interact with the news media, and equip them with basic news writing skills and design and layout knowledge. Students are expected to build a working knowledge of structured, balanced, accurate and effective news reporting, and to develop the necessary professional attitudes and skills.
Written and Speech Communication
  • This module aims to equip students with the skills to write effectively in both academic and professional settings. In addition to acquiring the basics of structure and style, students will learn how to formulate and develop clear writing objectives and flesh these out into coherent and cohesive written pieces. There is a strong focus on citation skills and grammar. Students will also deconstruct texts, construct arguments, and sustain inquiry through research. Students will read other writers’ works, and engage and confront different views with their peers, to negotiate meaning and re-evaluate their own ideas. Students will also learn how to become composed, credible and articulate speakers in a variety of professional situations. They will be taught to organise their ideas logically and to use appropriate visuals to lend impact to vocal delivery.
Sound and Radio Production
  • Students will develop fundamental critical listening, writing and audio production skills to produce effective productions for radio. They will have hands-on experience in the audio production studio and will be introduced to recording, interview and editing techniques with the use of digital editing software and the appropriate software and console. Students will also understand the nature and structure of radio companies and learn to use words and sounds to paint mental pictures for their intended audience. They will be able to use their voice effectively for on-air radio presentation and perform basic audio manipulation.
Television and Film Production
  • This module is designed to help students acquire the knowledge and basic skills in a TV and film production studio. With professional guidance, students will learn the process of directing media production from overall concept, theme, content, characters, narrative and visual style to filming execution. It covers the process of directing, providing feedback and describing the overall creative vision to the cameraman, performers, key creative personnel and crew. It also covers participation in the postproduction process by putting the pieces of the film together with an editor and sound producer to create a final product.
Storytelling with Social Media
  • This module teaches the concepts of storytelling via social media, for both social and business applications. In this module, students will learn the powerful techniques of storytelling and scriptwriting to deliver complex messages in a simple manner. They will then learn to shoot videos for maximum effect on social media, including on-camera presence techniques where they will learn to sound confident and present with power.
Editing and Publishing for Social Media
  • This module teaches advanced scriptwriting, how to edit videos for maximum impact on social media, adding sound effects and music to bring extra emotion. The module also teaches where and how to post videos for maximum impact and why audience is one of the most important parts of publishing the video. We will also teach monetisation and winning against the algorithms and how to grow a loyal audience.
