Loss on Ignition (LOI) is
a common analytical test that measures the weight lost from a sample when it is heated to a high temperature, causing volatile substances like organic matter, water, and some minerals to escape. This method is widely used in soil science and the analysis of sediments to determine the amount of organic matter and inorganic carbon, and in the quality control of materials like cements, catalysts, and other inorganic products.
What Loss on Ignition Measures
The specific content lost depends on the ignition temperature:
- LOI at 105°C: A proxy for the amount of water in the sample.
- LOI at 550°C: Primarily measures the loss of organic matter.
- LOI at 950°C: Primarily measures the loss of inorganic carbon (from carbonates).
