Description
Audi timing chains are made to last a long time, usually around 100,000–150,000+ kms. Some can even reach 200,000 kms.
But they are not maintenance-free.
- Some engines (especially older 2.0T and V8) may start wearing out earlier, around 80,000–100,000 miles
- Regular oil changes (every 3,000–5,000 miles) are very important
- Good oil care helps prevent the chain from stretching too early
Symptoms of a Failing Timing Chain :-
- If you experience any of these signs, you should have your timing chain checked:
- Rattling Noise: Loud metallic rattling, especially on cold starts.
- Engine Codes: OBDII codes such as P0016 or high cam-adaptation values (e.g., beyond -5 degrees).
- Reduced Engine Performance: Misfires or low power.
Cost of Repair
- Timing chain replacement is labor-intensive (often 30+ hours) as the engine and gearbox often need to be removed.
