As an HVAC and Clean Air Specialist, we address three critical technical risks when applying VSD control to explosion-proof fans:
Voltage Spikes (dV/dt): VSDs create high-frequency switching pulses. These can cause voltage spikes at the motor terminals that exceed the insulation rating of an "Ex d" (Flameproof) or "Ex e" (Increased Safety) motor, potentially causing an internal spark.
Motor Cooling at Low Speeds: Most Ex-motors are "Self-Cooled" by a fan on the shaft. When the VSD slows the motor down, the cooling fan also slows. We perform Thermal Load Analysis to ensure the motor does not exceed its Temperature Class (T-Rating) at low RPM.
Bearing Currents: VSDs can induce "Common Mode Voltage," leading to electrical discharges through the motor bearings. This creates "pitting" and heat, which is a major ignition risk in Zone 1 or Zone 2.

We ensure the VSD and the motor are "Matched." Under ATEX/IECEx rules, the motor and drive must be tested together to verify that the motor surface temperature stays within safe limits across the entire speed range.
Output Filters (Sine-Wave/dV/dt): We install filters between the VSD and the motor to smooth out the voltage pulses, protecting the motor’s flameproof enclosure from electrical stress.
Shaft Grounding Rings: We integrate conductive micro-fiber rings to bleed off induced currents to the ground, preventing bearing sparks.
Every fan assembly has a "Natural Frequency." Running at certain speeds can cause violent Vibration.
The Service: We perform a Vibration Spectrum Analysis during commissioning and program "Skip Frequencies" into the VSD to ensure the fan never dwells at speeds that could cause mechanical contact between the blades and the housing.
