A Hammer Union is a high-strength, quick-connect fitting used to join pipes, hoses, or equipment in high-pressure fluid systems.
They are commonly used in the oilfield, drilling, and industrial fluid transfer industries for their ability to withstand extreme pressure, vibration, and shock loads.
The connection is made by mating a male and female half, secured by tightening with a hammer — hence the name.
Components
Male Sub (threaded or welded end) – houses the O-ring or lip seal.
Female Sub (threaded or welded end) – mates with the male sub.
Nut – locks the male and female halves together.
Materials
High-strength alloy steel, forged and heat-treated for durability.
Available in stainless steel or other alloys for corrosive service.
Seal
Nitrile, Viton®, or HNBR O-ring for standard service.
Lip seals or metal-to-metal seals for high-temp or abrasive service.
Size Range: 1" to 12" nominal bore.
Pressure Ratings: 1,000 psi to 20,000+ psi (depends on figure rating).
End Connections: Butt-weld, threaded (NPT, BSP), or API line pipe thread.
Standards: API 6A, ASTM, and manufacturer-specific designs.
Figures: Common figure codes include:
Fig 100 / 200 – low pressure (1,000–2,000 psi) water, air, mud.
Fig 206 / 207 – medium pressure (2,000–4,000 psi) steam, oil, gas.
Fig 400 / 600 – high pressure (4,000–6,000 psi) fracturing, cementing.
Fig 1002 / 1502 – extreme pressure (10,000–15,000 psi) drilling, well service.
Oilfield & Drilling – mud lines, cementing, fracturing, choke and kill lines.
Industrial Fluid Transfer – high-pressure water, slurry, and abrasive media.
Marine & Offshore – fuel and hydraulic hose connections.
Mining – high-pressure slurry transport and dewatering systems.
Quick Connection/Disconnection – no need for special tools.
High Strength & Durability – forged construction handles shock loads.
Wide Range of Pressure Ratings – from low-pressure water to ultra-high-pressure well service.
Versatile End Connections – adaptable to different pipe or hose types.
Field Serviceable – seals and parts can be replaced on-site.
