Description

Magnesium Sulphate Test (Soundness Test)

The Magnesium Sulphate Soundness Test, performed in accordance with ASTM C88, evaluates aggregate durability and weathering resistance, specifically their capacity to tolerate repeated wetting and drying cycles. The test replicates freeze-thaw conditions and uses magnesium sulphate to assess the aggregate's resistance to disintegration. This test is critical in road construction and exposed concrete applications where aggregates are subjected to fluctuating moisture and temperature. Aggregates that pass this test are very resistant to weather-induced degradation, resulting in longer-lasting pavements, runways and buildings. It is especially crucial in areas with extreme weather or where freeze-thaw cycles are prevalent.
