Shear Vane Test
The Shear Vane Test is an in-field test that quickly determines the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils, particularly soft clays. This test, performed in accordance with ASTM D2573 or BS 1377-9, includes inserting and spinning a four-blade vane into the ground to determine the torque necessary to produce soil failure. It is often used for site investigations, embankment building, and ground improvement projects that require quick, dependable findings. The test is non-invasive and enables vertical profiling of strength with depth. Its simplicity, mobility, and efficacy make it an excellent instrument for determining soil consistency and stability on-site.
