Bitumen Penetration Test
Bitumen Penetration Test

The Bitumen Penetration Test is an established method for assessing bituminous binders based on consistency. This test allows a standard needle to pierce a bitumen sample for 5 seconds under certain conditions (100g load at 25°C). The depth of penetration, measured in tenths of a millimeter, indicates whether the bitumen is hard or soft. The test, conducted in accordance with ASTM D5 and AASHTO T49, is crucial in binder selection, especially for climate-adaptive pavements. Softer binders are better suited to cooler areas for increased flexibility, whilst stronger grades resist deformation in warm regions. It is also widely used for quality control in refineries and mixing plants.
