Graves' disease
Toxic multinodular goitre
Toxic adenoma
Pre-operative preparation before thyroid surgery in hyperthyroid patients.
Before or after radioactive iodine therapy to stabilize thyroid hormone levels.
Management of thyroid storm (thyrotoxic crisis) — a severe, life-threatening complication of hyperthyroidism.
Dosage (Adults):
Initial dose: Typically 15–60 mg/day, divided into 2–3 doses depending on severity.
Maintenance dose: Usually 5–15 mg/day once a normal thyroid level is achieved.
Administration:
Take orally with or without food, but ideally at consistent times each day.
Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Regular thyroid function tests (T3, T4, TSH) are needed to monitor response.
Precautions:
Do not stop the medication suddenly unless instructed by a doctor.
Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms like fever, sore throat, or fatigue occur—may indicate agranulocytosis (a rare but serious side effect).
Use cautiously in pregnancy and avoid high doses; consult your doctor for dose adjustments.
Avoid taking it with other medications that may affect thyroid function unless advised.
