Self-Ligating Braces vs Traditional Metal Braces: What Patients Should Know

Braces have come a long way in modern orthodontics. Today, patients have several options to straighten their teeth, correct bite problems, and improve their smile. Two common types of fixed orthodontic appliances are traditional metal braces and self-ligating braces.

Both systems are effective, but they work slightly differently. Understanding the difference can help patients feel more confident when discussing treatment options with their dentist.

What Are Traditional Metal Braces?

Traditional metal braces are the most familiar type of braces. They use small metal brackets that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth. A metal wire, called an archwire, runs through the brackets and helps guide the teeth into better alignment.

To hold the wire in place, traditional braces usually use small elastic rings called ligatures or “modules.” These elastics are changed during adjustment appointments and can come in different colours, which many younger patients enjoy.

What Are Self-Ligating Braces?

Self-ligating braces look similar to traditional metal braces, but they have one important difference: they do not need elastic ligatures to hold the wire in place.

Instead, each bracket has a built-in clip or sliding door that secures the archwire. This allows the wire to move more freely within the bracket.

Self-ligating braces may be made of metal or ceramic, but metal self-ligating braces are especially popular because they are durable and efficient.

How Do Self-Ligating Braces Work?

Self-ligating braces use gentle, continuous forces to move teeth. The built-in clip holds the archwire while reducing friction between the wire and bracket.

In some cases, this may allow teeth to move more smoothly during certain stages of treatment. The system can also make wire changes quicker because the dentist or orthodontist does not need to remove and replace elastic modules on each bracket.
