Four things to match: connection size, body configuration, mesh rating, and flow capacity.
Connection size first — NPT, BSPP, or SAE straight thread, and it has to match the pump inlet port exactly. Body configuration is either in-tank (element submerged in the reservoir) or in-line (serviceable bowl on the inlet line). Mesh rating comes from the pump OEM’s spec — use what they call for, not finer (more on that below). Flow capacity needs to comfortably exceed your pump’s max flow rate, especially during cold starts when viscosity spikes and restriction is highest.
