Nippon Paint NIOZ is a high-performance, two-pack solvent-based inorganic zinc silicate coating. Formulated with moisture-curing ethyl silicate and zinc dust, it is specifically designed to provide superior anti-corrosion protection for steel surfaces. It functions effectively as a shop primer, a high-performance primer for heavy-duty systems, or as a single-treatment coating in harsh marine environments. The high zinc content offers galvanic protection, preventing rust creep even if the film is scratched. It is highly resistant to weathering, abrasion, impact, and a wide range of solvents, with a dry service temperature resistance of up to 400°C.
Paint Type: Solvent-based (Two-Pack)
Finishing: Matt
Color: Grey
Specific Gravity: 3.00 – 3.10 (Mixed)
Volume Solids: 65% ± 2%
Mixing Ratio: 1 part Binder (Pack A) to 1 part Zinc Dust (Pack B) by volume
Pot Life: 6 hours (at 25°C – 30°C)
Touch Dry: 5 – 10 minutes
Hard Dry: 2 – 3 hours
Full Cure: 6 – 7 days (Dependent on humidity and temperature)
Theoretical Coverage: 26.0 m²/litre (at 25μm DFT) | 8.7 m²/litre (at 75μm DFT)
Heat Resistance: Up to 400°C (Dry service)
Mixing: Stir Pack A (Binder) thoroughly. While continuing to stir, gradually add the total contents of Pack B (Zinc Dust). Use a mechanical stirrer and continue mixing until the mixture is completely homogeneous. Filter the mixture through a 30-60 mesh screen before application.
Application Method: Primarily applied by Compressed Air Spray with an agitated pressure pot to prevent zinc settling.
Touch-up: A brush may be used for small areas or touch-ups only. Roller application is not recommended.
Thinning: Use 10% – 20% by volume of Nippon ZS-100 Thinner for spray application.
Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with Nippon ZS-100 Thinner.
Precaution: Avoid exposure to water or chemicals before the coating reaches full cure.
For Severe Corrosive Environments (Offshore/Petrochemical):
Primer (1 Coat): Nippon Paint NIOZ (50 – 75 microns DFT).
Intermediate (1 Coat): Nippon Paint EA4 Finish or Nippon High-Pon 20-04 STE 80.
Topcoat (1 Coat): Nippon Polyurethane Recoatable Finish (PU).
For Heat Resistance System:
Primer (1 Coat): Nippon Paint NIOZ.
Topcoat (2 Coats): Nippon Heat Resisting Aluminium (up to 400°C).
General: The surface must be dry and free from oil, grease, dirt, and other contaminants.
Steel Surfaces: Abrasive blasting to a minimum of Sa 2.5 (ISO 8501-1) is mandatory. For optimum performance in extreme conditions, Sa 3.0 is highly recommended.
Surface Profile: A surface profile of 40–75 microns is required to ensure mechanical bonding.
Maintenance: If rust bloom or "white rust" (zinc salts) forms before the application of a topcoat, the surface must be re-blasted or scrubbed with fresh water and allowed to dry thoroughly.
Intercoat Adhesion: If overcoating is delayed beyond 7 days, the NIOZ surface should be lightly sanded (roughened) to ensure proper adhesion with the next coat.
