The Yellow-Footed Tortoise is the "giant cousin" of the Red-Footed Tortoise. Native to the deep Amazon rainforest, it is the largest tortoise species on the South American mainland. As the name suggests, it features distinct golden-yellow scales on its limbs and head, contrasting beautifully with its dark, broad shell. Generally shyer and larger than the Red-Foot, this species is a prestigious animal for keepers who have the space to accommodate a gentle rainforest giant.
Notes: Like their Red-Footed cousins, they are tropical tortoises that require high humidity and warm temperatures year-round. They cannot tolerate cold or dry environments. Their diet is omnivorous, requiring a mix of calcium-rich greens, fruits (melon, papaya), and occasional animal protein.
Size & Space Alert: This species grows significantly larger than the Red-Footed Tortoise. Adults need a substantial enclosure or a dedicated room; they are not suitable for small terrariums long-term.
Why Source This Species:
• Impressive Size: Offers the "Giant Tortoise" experience but is still smaller than a Sulcata.
• Rarity: Much less common in the pet trade than Red-Foots, commanding a higher price.
• Golden Aesthetic: The yellow highlights offer a different visual appeal for collectors.
