Contact & non-contact level measurement Smart Level technology IO-Link setup options

Need to detect and monitor fill levels in containers, pipes, or tanks—either with or without contact through non-metallic container walls? Balluff capacitive level sensors are built for reliable capacitive level measurement across a wide range of industrial applications.

For applications that require direct contact with the media, contact level sensors determine the fill level of granulates, powders, viscous substances, liquids, and other bulk materials. They are available in multiple configurations such as cylindrical designs, immersion probes, and options for hole or flange mounting, including pressure-rated versions.

For non-contact level measurement through non-metallic container walls, capacitive non-contact level sensors detect liquids and bulk materials without direct interaction. With Balluff’s patented Smart Level technology, sensors compensate for moisture, foam, and adhesion and can work through glass and plastic barriers up to 10 mm thick.

Built for real-world level measurement
Choose contact or non-contact and configure quickly—also via IO-Link.

Special features of our capacitive level sensors

Capacitive level measurement solutions for media detection, flexible mounting, and stable results in challenging conditions.

What can they measure?

  • Plastic granulate, grain, feed, and wood pellets
  • Oils and aqueous liquids
  • Acids and alkalis (with suitable housing materials)
  • Conductive powder and bulk solids

What makes them robust?

  • Large selection of configurations and housing materials (incl. cost-effective versions)
  • Easy adjustment and setup, also via IO-Link
  • Patented Smart Level technology compensates for adhesion, moisture, and foam
  • Non-contact versions for measurement through non-metallic walls
Smart Level: Improves stability when media creates foam, moisture, or residue on the sensor surface—ideal for real production environments.

Where are capacitive level sensors used?

Capacitive level sensors are used to detect and monitor fill levels in containers, pipes, and tanks—supporting stable operation and reducing process interruptions due to inaccurate level detection.

Typical applications

  • Level monitoring of liquids and bulk solids in tanks and hoppers
  • Non-contact level detection through non-metallic walls (glass/plastic)
  • Granulate/powder level sensing in feed, grain, and pellet handling
  • Viscous media monitoring (with suitable sensor design and material)

Why teams choose Balluff capacitive level sensors

  • Flexible designs (cylindrical, probe, disk, cubic) and mounting options
  • High chemical resistance via stainless steel, PTFE, and PEEK variants
  • Stable results with Smart Level compensation for foam/moisture/adhesion
  • Faster commissioning with easy adjustment and IO-Link setup options
Short definition: A capacitive level sensor detects fill level by changes in capacitance, enabling reliable level monitoring for liquids and bulk materials—with contact or non-contact variants depending on the application.

FAQ: Balluff capacitive level sensors

Quick answers to help select the right sensor concept, mounting style, and material for your application.

Contact sensors interact directly with the media and are ideal for granulates, powders, viscous substances, and liquids. Non-contact sensors measure through non-metallic container walls (e.g., glass/plastic) without direct contact with the media.

Smart Level technology helps compensate for moisture, foam, and adhesion that can cause false switching or unstable readings, improving reliability in real production environments.

Capacitive level sensors are available in designs such as cylindrical, probe, disk, and cubic. Housing materials can include stainless steel, PTFE, and PEEK for high chemical resistance, plus selected plastic options.

Yes. Many variants support easy adjustment and setup, and configuration can also be performed via IO-Link where available—helpful for faster commissioning and consistent parameterization.
