Temperament

Shibas have a very distinct personality:

• Independent & strong-willed

• Loyal to family but not overly clingy

• Alert—excellent watchdog

• Clean and easy to house-train

• Can be aloof with strangers

• Great with adults; require socialization for children and other pets

They are often described as a mix between a cat and a dog.

Trainability

• Smart but stubborn

• Not naturally eager to please

• Consistent training + positive reinforcement needed

• Early socialization is essential to prevent reactivity

• Can be vocal (Shiba scream!)

• Height: 34–43 cm

• Weight: 7–11 kg

• Upright ears

• Curled, plush tail

• Thick double coat

Coat Colours

Common:

• Red

• Sesame (red with black tips)

• Black & tan

• Cream (less preferred in show standard)

Grooming

• Double coat → heavy shedding twice a year (“blow coat”)

• Weekly brushing, daily during shedding season

• Bath once every 2–3 months

• Nails grow fast → regular trimming

• Clean ears as needed

‍ Exercise Needs

• Medium to high energy

• Requires daily walks + mental enrichment

• Likes structured activities (agility, hiking)

• Can be an escape artist → secure fencing needed
