Introduction

Coaching subordinates for development and performance have become one of the most important leadership skills to master. Coaching is not just about directing, telling or advising. It is a specialized dialoguing technique designed to bring out the best in a person. This skill is more so required in holding performance appraisal session where the immediate superior helps the subordinate assess areas of strengths and opportunities, set performance goals and objectives, reviewing accomplishments, and rewarding performance. Mentoring on the other hand is a more hands-on approach for leaders to provide step by step guidance in leading their employees.
