Bitumen Ductility Test
The Bitumen Ductility Test examines bitumen's flexibility and adhesion characteristics by determining its ability to stretch without breaking. In this test, a typical bitumen briquette is stretched in a temperature-controlled water bath until it snaps, then the elongation is measured in centimeters. This test, performed in accordance with ASTM D113 and AASHTO T51, is particularly valuable in determining how well the bitumen can accommodate movement inside the pavement caused by heat expansion, contraction, and traffic loads. Flexible bitumen is vital for preventing cracks, especially in colder areas. The ductility value is also important in binder categorization, particularly when additives or polymers are employed to improve conventional asphalt performance. It gives important data for selecting bitumen that is appropriate for durable and long-lasting pavement systems.
