Active Ingredient (Content)
- Acarbose 100 /mg per tablet: an alpha glucosidase inhibitor used to delay carbohydrate absorption and lower post meal blood glucose spikes.
Indications
- Adjunct treatment for Type 2 diabetes mellitus, used alongside diet and exercise for improved glycaemic control; particularly helpful in patients not achieving target glucose levels with diet alone.
Instructions for Use
- Administration
- For oral use only. Swallow tablet whole with a little liquid just before meals (ideally at the first bite). Alternatively, chew the tablet with the first few mouthfuls of the meal to maximize efficacy.
- Dosage
- Starting dose: 50 /mg three times daily (tds).
- May gradually increase up to 100–200 /mg tds as tolerated and as directed by physician.
- Average daily dose is around 300 /mg, individualized based on treatment response and side effect tolerance.
- Precautions & Side Effects
- Common GI side effects: flatulence, abdominal distension, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting; tends to improve over time with continued use.
- Contraindications: inflammatory bowel disease, colonic ulceration, partial intestinal obstruction, major hernia, severe hepatic or renal impairment, Roemheld’s syndrome, pregnancy, lactation, and children under 18 years.
- Use with caution: monitor liver enzyme levels during first 6–12 months of therapy; avoid concurrent use with sucrose, cholestyramine, intestinal adsorbents, digestive enzymes, neomycin, or digoxin due to interactions.
- Alcohol warning: may alter glucose metabolism and reduce drug efficacy; limiting alcohol is advised during treatment.
- Missed Dose
- If missed, take as soon as remembered—unless it's close to the next scheduled dose. Do not double up to compensate for a missed dose
