For better accuracy, the rain gauge should be installed in an open area and kept in a true vertical position. Avoid placing it too close to high trees, fences, buildings, slopes or terraces.
Select an open site, unobstructed by high trees or fences, on level ground.
Secure the rain gauge to a post by mounting the enclosed bracket in a true vertical position.
Position it as near to the ground as possible, or at the lowest safe height.
Keep the gauge twice as far away as the height of surrounding buildings or trees.
Measure rainfall at 9 a.m. daily and check immediately after heavy rain.
The best results are obtained by installing the Nylex Rain Gauge in pairs and spacing them about 6 meters apart. The effects of strong winds are reduced and more accurate readings may be obtained from the average of such pairs.
The rain gauge should be fixed and positioned away from surrounding buildings or trees. As a guide, it should be placed twice as far away as the height of the surrounding structure.
