Adjunct to diet and exercise in adults with type /2 diabetes mellitus when combination therapy with linagliptin and metformin is appropriate.
For patients inadequately controlled on:
Maximal tolerated dose of metformin monotherapy
Metformin + sulphonylurea
Metformin + insulin
Free combination of linagliptin + metformin
Take twice daily with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects due to metformin (e.g. nausea, diarrhea)
Maintain diet and exercise for optimal glycaemic effect
Monitor blood glucose regularly; risk of hypoglycaemia increases if used with sulfonylureas or insulin — dose adjust those agents accordingly
Missed dose: Take as soon as remembered unless it's near next dose; do not double up
Report immediately: symptoms like rapid breathing, persistent nausea or vomiting, stomach pain — possible lactic acidosis
Inform healthcare provider before any surgery or iodinated contrast imaging procedures
