You feel better.
The pain is gone.
You can jog.
You can jump… a little.
So you’re ready to play again, right?
Not necessarily.
Returning to volleyball too early is one of the biggest reasons injuries come back — especially knee, ankle, shoulder, and back injuries.
Pain-free does NOT mean performance-ready.
Let’s break it down properly. 👇
Volleyball is explosive.
It demands:
Repeated jumping
Sudden direction changes
Overhead power
Hard landings
Even if daily walking feels fine, your body may not be ready for:
✔️ Max-height jumps
✔️ Quick lateral movement
✔️ Full-speed spiking
✔️ Long tournament days
📌 Tissue healing is not the same as performance readiness.
Safe return-to-play requires more than no pain.
Here’s what physiotherapists look for:
Your injured side should be at least 90–95% as strong as the uninjured side.
If not, compensation increases injury risk.
You must be able to:
Land softly
Maintain knee alignment
Absorb force through hips
Avoid inward knee collapse
Poor landing = repeat injury.
Limited ankle, knee, shoulder, or spinal mobility increases stress elsewhere.
Before full return, you should tolerate:
✔️ Repeated jumps
✔️ Quick directional drills
✔️ Controlled spiking
✔️ Simulated match intensity
Many injuries happen late in games — when fatigue sets in.
If strength drops quickly, risk rises.
⚠️ Pain after training
⚠️ Swelling returns
⚠️ Fear of jumping
⚠️ Reduced power
⚠️ Limping after sessions
⚠️ Shoulder tightness after hitting
If these appear, progression is too fast.
At Benphysio, we don’t just “clear” athletes — we prepare them.
Our return-to-play plan includes:
Because returning physically ready is only half the battle.
Mental readiness matters too.
Rough guideline (varies by injury):
Mild ankle sprain: 2–4 weeks
Jumper’s knee: 4–8+ weeks
Shoulder overload: 4–8 weeks
Back strain: 4–12 weeks
📌 Timeline depends on strength and control — not just calendar days.
They return when:
👉 Pain decreases
👉 Tournament is near
👉 Coach pressures them
👉 Teammates need them
But skipping rehab phases increases long-term downtime.
Short-term impatience = long-term setback.
1. If I’m pain-free, can I play?
Not always. Strength and control must also be restored.
2. Do ankle braces make it safe to return early?
They help support — but don’t replace strength recovery.
3. Should I avoid jumping at first?
Jumping should be gradually reintroduced, not avoided completely.
4. What if pain only comes after training?
That means load exceeds capacity.
5. Can teenagers return faster than adults?
They may heal faster, but still need strength progression.
6. Is rest alone enough?
No. Rest reduces pain but doesn’t rebuild capacity.
7. Who decides when I’m ready?
A physiotherapist can objectively assess readiness.
The goal isn’t just to get back on court.
It’s to:
✨ Return stronger
✨ Reduce re-injury risk
✨ Improve performance
✨ Build long-term durability
Volleyball demands power and resilience.
Physiotherapy ensures you have both.
Because coming back too early is easy.
Coming back stronger takes strategy.
