Reliable motor solutions and industrial service guidance for palm oil mills and biomass plants.
Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) is a valuable byproduct of the palm oil industry, widely used for biomass fuel, pellet production, and energy generation. The entire PKS processing line depends heavily on electric induction motors, which power almost every mechanical system from crushing to drying and pelletizing.
PKS processing typically involves several key stages. Below we explain each stage and the induction motor roles associated with them.
After palm oil extraction, palm nuts are cracked to separate the kernel from the shell.
Separated shells pass through vibrating screens and air classifiers to remove dust and fibers.
Moisture must be reduced (usually below ~10%) before combustion or pelletizing.
For specific boiler feeds or briquette production, shells may be grounded to finer particles.
Dry PKS can be compressed into pellets or briquettes for transport and combustion.
Pellets or shells are cooled and transported to silo storage.
| Application | Motor Type | Typical Power Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kernel crusher | 3-phase induction | 15–75 kW | Heavy-duty, high starting torque |
| Conveyor system | TEFC induction | 3–15 kW | Dust-proof housing recommended |
| Rotary dryer | Slip ring or 3-phase | 30–90 kW | Variable speed beneficial |
| Pelletizer | 3-phase induction | 45–110 kW | Continuous high torque |
| Blower / Fan | Induction motor (2-pole) | 5–30 kW | Used for combustion/cooling air |
Improving motor efficiency reduces operating costs across PKS plants:
Palm kernel shells are commonly used as biomass fuel in boilers and gasifiers. Reliable motors are critical for:
Motor reliability directly impacts overall plant efficiency and safety.
PKS processing produces dust that can be combustible. Consider:
Electric induction motors are the backbone of palm kernel shell processing systems—driving crushers, dryers, conveyors, pelletizers and more. Selecting the right motor type, using VFDs where appropriate, and maintaining motors proactively will keep your PKS line efficient, reliable, and safe.
