Urgent Year-End Alert: Your NEM Rakyat Credits Will VANISH on January 1, 2026

Malaysia’s NEM Rakyat (NEM 3.0) solar homeowners are facing a critical year-end deadline. Any unused solar credits accumulated in 2025 will be completely forfeited at 12:00 AM on 1 January 2026.

If you do not act now, your entire “Baki NEM Terkumpul” will reset to zero, and your solar savings will be permanently lost.

What Your NEM Rakyat (NEM 3.0) Credits Actually Mean

If you are part of NEM Rakyat, you enjoy Malaysia’s most favourable solar arrangement: A true 1-to-1 kWh offset.

For every 1 kWh you export to the grid, you receive 1 kWh credit to offset your TNB bill. These credits:

  • Accumulate monthly within the same calendar year

  • Lower your electricity bill

  • Accelerate your solar ROI

However, they do not carry forward across years.

The Annual Reset: A Rule You Cannot Ignore

The Official Rule:

All unused NEM Rakyat credits are forfeited on 1 January every year.
No carry-forward.
No grace period.
No payout.
No exceptions.

This means whatever “Baki NEM Terkumpul” you see on your TNB bill or myTNB app will be erased when the new year begins.

Why You Can’t Withdraw or Cash Out Your Credits

NEM does not function like a savings account.

NEM operates on a real-time matching model:

  • If you export 20 kWh at 2 PM

  • And import 20 kWh at 9 PM

  • They cancel each other automatically

Your accumulated balance is only the unpaired excess that you have yet to offset.

To make use of expiring credits, you must increase grid import before 31 December.

How to SAVE Your Expiring Credits (Emergency Action Plan)

Step 1: Check Your Current Balance

Log in to myTNB or check your latest TNB bill and find:

Baki NEM Terkumpul (kWh)

This indicates how much you stand to lose.

Review:

  • Your average daily import (kWh/day)

  • Days left until year-end

  • How much import you must increase to exhaust your balance

Step 2: Increase Consumption Strategically (Use After Sunset)

To utilize expiring credits, increase electricity consumption during non-solar hours.

Effective strategies include:

  • Use air-conditioning at lower settings overnight

  • Run washing machines, dryers, and ironing at night

  • Maximise electric water heater usage

  • Do baking, cooking, and oven use after sunset

  • Charge EVs, power tools, and backup batteries at night

  • Turn on festive or decorative lighting in the evenings

Every additional kWh consumed at night helps burn your credits.

Step 3: Monitor Daily Until 31 December

Track your consumption-import daily.

Your goal:
Match or slightly exceed your annual export by 31 December.

This ensures almost zero credits left before the reset.

If You Always Have a High Year-End Balance, Read This

A consistent year-end surplus means your system is likely oversized for your consumption levels.

  2. Increase Household Load
    Plan future upgrades such as:
