BTU2X Portable Ultrasonic Flow / BTU Meter

3Wire BTU2X is a compact portable ultrasonic flow meter for non-invasive flow verification, temporary flow surveys, pump and valve performance checking, system balancing, data logging and optional BTU / energy measurement.

The BTU2X uses clamp-on ultrasonic transducers, so there is no tapping, pipe cutting or pressure head loss during installation. For the BTU / energy meter version, the unit is supplied with clamp-on PT1000 temperature sensors to measure inlet and outlet temperature for heat / energy calculation.

Product Overview

BTU2X is designed for engineers, energy auditors, facility teams, commissioning teams and maintenance teams who need to measure flow without permanently modifying the pipe. Its portability makes it suitable for checking flow across multiple points in a plant or building.

The instrument can be used to verify system values over an extended period, identify pump or valve issues, validate existing flow meters, support chilled water balancing, collect temporary flow data or support energy audit and measurement & verification activities.

Transit-Time Ultrasonic Measuring Principle

BTU2X calculates flow by comparing the upstream and downstream ultrasonic transit time through the moving liquid. The time difference is used to calculate flow velocity and flow rate.

Flow and BTU Measurement

For flow measurement, the BTU2X uses clamp-on ultrasonic transducers installed on the pipe surface. The meter calculates velocity and flow rate based on the upstream and downstream transit-time difference.

For BTU / energy measurement, the meter uses flow rate together with inlet and outlet temperature measurement. By measuring the volumetric flow rate of the heat-transfer liquid and the temperature difference across the system, the delivered or removed energy can be calculated.

Application note: Ultrasonic transit-time measurement requires a suitable single-medium liquid and good pipe condition. Heavy bubbles, high suspended solids, poor pipe surface condition or insufficient straight pipe length may affect accuracy.
