☀️ Solar ATAP Scheme | Officially Effective from 1 January 2026

Malaysia is entering a new phase of solar energy policy. ATAP (Accelerated Transition Action Programme) is a government initiative that will officially replace the NEM (Net Energy Metering) scheme for consumers.

Under the ATAP mechanism, solar systems are designed with a “self-consumption first” concept:
Electricity generated during the day is used directly within the premises. Any excess energy is exported to the TNB grid and used to offset the electricity bill for the same billing month.

📌 Key Points to Note:

  • ATAP bill credits apply only within the same billing month

  • Credits cannot be carried forward to the next month

  • Credits cannot be converted into cash

  • Offsets apply only to energy charges, and do not cover AFA, SST, or other non-energy charges

🏠 Residential Capacity Limits:

  • Single-phase: up to 5 kW

  • Three-phase: up to 15 kW
(Systems above this require TNB grid connection approval)

📄 Contract duration: up to 10 years
After the contract expires, users may continue to self-consume solar energy, but exporting electricity to TNB will no longer be allowed.

Overall, ATAP is best suited for users with stable electricity consumption who aim to reduce long-term electricity costs and prioritize self-consumption, while encouraging more practical and right-sized solar system designs.
