California Bearing Ratio Test

The California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test is a popular method for determining the strength and bearing capacity of subgrade soil, sub-base, and base course materials in road and pavement construction. The ASTM D1883 and BS 1377-4-compliant test includes measuring the pressure required to penetrate a soil sample with a standard plunger at a defined pace. It gives a clear indicator of soils' load-bearing capability, which is very useful in flexible pavement design. The CBR value enables engineers to make educated judgments concerning pavement layer thickness and material appropriateness. It is an important factor in the design of roadways, airports, and other infrastructure projects requiring ground support. When done in situ, the test mirrors field circumstances, resulting in more accurate design inputs.
