Powerside Power Quality Relay / Sensor
PQ1 Power Quality Relay
The Powerside PQ1 is a compact power quality relay designed for fast detection of voltage disturbances on AC mains. It provides a simple AC-input, relay-contact-output method for PLCs, SCADA systems, machine controllers and alarm systems to know when a sag, dip, swell, interruption or impulse has occurred.
PQ1 is suitable when the site does not require a full power quality analyser, but still needs a practical event detector that can be embedded into machines, semiconductor tools, medical equipment, elevators, HVAC controls, data centres, telecom systems and industrial control panels.

Overview: Simple Relay Output for Power Events
PQ1 is built for quick integration into equipment and control systems. It monitors the AC mains and operates relay outputs when a qualifying power quality event is detected. The relay contacts can be wired into PLC digital inputs, error logs, alarms, interlocks or machine control systems.
It comes with preset international power quality response curves, allowing the user to select a suitable threshold standard without building a custom monitoring algorithm. This makes the PQ1 useful for equipment builders, semiconductor plants, automation systems and facilities that need immediate event notification.
Key positioning
PQ1 is best positioned as a compact relay-based power quality event detector for equipment protection, machine troubleshooting, power-event alarm signalling and fast PLC / SCADA integration.
Typical Control Integration
PQ1 converts supply disturbance events into relay contact signals that normal industrial control systems can understand.
1. AC Supply Connect monitored mains voltage to PQ1 input.
2. PQ1 Detection Detect sag, swell, interruption or impulse events.
3. Relay Action Selected normally-closed contact opens during event.
4. PLC / SCADA Digital input logs event and timestamp.
5. Action Alarm, ticket, investigation or equipment correlation.

What PQ1 Detects
| Power Quality Event |
Description |
Typical Impact |
| Voltage Sag / Dip |
Short-duration voltage reduction below the selected threshold. |
PLC reset, VFD trip, control power interruption or machine stoppage. |
| Major Sag |
Deeper voltage reduction that is more likely to affect sensitive equipment. |
Tool trip, process interruption, failed production batch or nuisance service call. |
| Voltage Swell |
Short-duration voltage rise above the selected threshold. |
Power supply stress, equipment alarm or control component disturbance. |
| Interruption |
Loss or near-loss of voltage supply for a qualifying duration. |
Equipment shutdown, controller reboot or system fault logging. |
| Impulse |
Fast high-frequency transient event detected down to 500ns. |
Electronics disturbance, unexplained equipment fault or communication issue. |
Relay Output Operation
PQ1 uses normally-closed dry relay contacts. When a power quality event is detected, the related contact opens and then recloses at the end of the event. This allows the PQ1 to act like a clear event switch for PLCs, SCADA inputs, machine controllers and alarm circuits.
| Relay Output |
Purpose |
Integration Example |
| Impulse / Swell |
Indicates an impulse or voltage swell event. |
Connect to alarm, event logger, PLC input or remote I/O input. |
| Minor Sag |
Indicates a voltage sag event according to the selected curve. |
Log disturbance before it becomes a machine trip. |
| Major Sag |
Indicates a deeper sag or more severe supply disturbance. |
Trigger priority alarm or equipment protection logic. |
Control-system use
The relay outputs can be connected to PLC digital inputs, SCADA event inputs, machine error logs, alarm relays, remote I/O modules or IoTWatt 4.0 gateway inputs.
Built-In Threshold Standards
PQ1 includes preset response curves for common power quality standards and equipment immunity references. This makes it practical for equipment builders, facilities teams and maintenance teams that need a simple way to monitor whether the incoming mains supply meets the selected tolerance curve.
SEMI F47
Commonly used as a voltage sag immunity reference for semiconductor tools.
ITIC / CBEMA
Used for information technology and business equipment power acceptability curves.
IEC / EN
Includes IEC and EN power quality / immunity related response thresholds.
MIL-STD
Supports selected military, shipboard and aircraft-related threshold references.
ZA / NRS
Includes selected regional power quality threshold references.
Standard Mode
Allows quick deployment without custom engineering or software configuration.

Higher voltage monitoring note
For 277Vrms to 600Vrms applications, use a suitable external step-down transformer and confirm the final wiring method against the installation design and local electrical safety requirements.
Typical Applications
Semiconductor Tools
Detect sag, interruption and impulse events that may cause tool trips or process interruption.
Automatic Manufacturing
Log power quality events into machine fault records and reduce trial-and-error troubleshooting.
Medical Equipment
Provide simple event indication for sensitive laboratory or medical electrical equipment.
Elevator Controls

Single-Phase and Three-Phase Use
PQ1 is a single-phase power quality sensor. It can be used on individual phases, or three PQ1 units can be combined to monitor a three-phase supply. It may be connected phase-to-neutral or phase-to-phase, as long as the nominal voltage is within the input range or stepped down through a suitable transformer.
Three-phase note
For three-phase monitoring, use one PQ1 per phase or per phase-to-phase point depending on the monitoring objective and system configuration.
Why Use PQ1?
Many equipment faults are blamed on the machine, drive, PLC or controller before the incoming mains supply is checked. PQ1 provides a practical way to confirm whether a voltage sag, swell, interruption or impulse happened at the same time as the equipment fault.
- Reduces repeated site visits and uncertain troubleshooting.
- Provides clear relay event signals for machine or SCADA logs.
- Helps identify whether power quality was involved in a trip or shutdown.
- Provides fast deployment without software setup.
- Works well as a low-cost event detector before deploying a full power quality analyser.
- Can support production, maintenance and facilities teams with clearer event evidence.
Integration with IoTWatt 4.0 and Monitoring Systems
PQ1 can be connected to digital input modules, PLCs, remote I/O, SCADA systems or IoT gateways. The relay contacts can then be used to create alarms, event logs, maintenance tickets or power quality event dashboards.
- Connect relay outputs to PLC or remote I/O digital inputs.
- Log sag, major sag and impulse / swell events separately.
- Use event timestamps from the receiving system for incident correlation.
- Combine with power meters or full PQ analysers for deeper event investigation.
- Use with IoTWatt 4.0 to generate alarms, tickets and site-level event visibility.
