Aggregate Soundness Test

The Aggregate Soundness Test, which is based on ASTM C88 standards, tests aggregates' resistance to weathering processes such as freezing, thawing, or wetting and drying. This test replicates environmental conditions by repeatedly exposing aggregates to sulfate solutions, simulating the cycles that occur naturally on exposed pavements and concrete surfaces. Aggregates that dissolve throughout these cycles are deemed unstable and unsuitable for long-term use. The soundness test is especially important for aggregates used in climate-variable locations, as it helps to verify that the materials used will keep their integrity and performance over time without surface deterioration or breaking.
