The government has earmarked RM350 million to upgrade the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur-Barat, JRTB) in Perak, specifically Route FT004, under the First Rolling Plan (RP1) of the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13). The improvements aim to make the highway safer, more comfortable, and more resilient for road users.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that preliminary work could begin this year, with physical construction expected to start next year.
Out of the total allocation, RM170 million will be used to upgrade 17 critical locations, with RM10 million per site to widen roads into overtaking lanes. These enhancements are designed to improve traffic flow and user safety along the route.
Additionally, RM40 million has been set aside for routine maintenance throughout the year. This includes road surface repairs, installation of safety facilities, and lighting improvements, implemented by the Public Works Department (JKR) and concessionaire Belati Wangsa Sdn Bhd.
The Works Ministry will continue monitoring the highway to ensure ongoing improvements and safety measures are applied as needed.
The upgrades follow a tragic incident on June 9, 2025, when a bus carrying 15 UPSI students from Jerteh, Terengganu, to UPSI Tanjong Malim Campus, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza at KM53 of the East-West Highway (Jeli–Gerik). Thirteen students died on the scene, while two others passed away in hospital.
Infrastructure enhancements like the East-West Highway upgrade can have a positive impact on regional property markets. Improved connectivity and road safety are key drivers for industrial land in Selangor, factories in Puchong, and industrial properties in the Subang area, as efficient logistics routes reduce operational costs and enhance accessibility.
Similarly, better transportation networks can benefit office space in Bukit Jalil and commercial property in KL, by improving accessibility for employees, clients, and logistics operations, thereby strengthening overall market confidence.
