Dry Kitchen, Wet Kitchen & Interior Design Project

Kitchen Story Sdn. Bhd. completed this kitchen-focused interior design and custom cabinetry project at Logan Residence, Georgetown, Penang. The project was designed around a practical dual-kitchen concept, with a modern dry kitchen for light preparation and casual dining, and a functional wet kitchen for everyday cooking.

The job scope included interior design for both dry and wet kitchen areas, custom kitchen cabinet fabrication, BLUM soft-closing hinges, BLUM soft-closing drawer system, breakfast table cabinet, countertop planning, storage organisation, and finishing coordination.

For the wet kitchen, we used Nyonya-style backsplash tiles to create a more lively and characterful cooking area. The patterned tiles add visual interest and make the kitchen feel less plain while still maintaining a clean and practical layout for daily use.

For the dry kitchen, we designed a modern cabinet layout with a built-in breakfast table for the client’s convenience. This creates a practical space for quick meals, drinks, light preparation, and casual interaction with family members. The dry kitchen uses a darker cabinet tone with warm wood elements, giving the space a modern and stylish appearance.

To improve long-term usability, the cabinets were fitted with BLUM soft-closing hinges and BLUM soft-closing drawer systems. This helps provide smoother movement, better daily comfort, and a more premium user experience.

The client was extremely happy with the final outcome and appreciated the overall workmanship, design planning, and practical kitchen arrangement.

Project Scope of Work

Design Concept

The design concept for this Logan Residence project is modern, practical, and lifestyle-focused.

The wet kitchen was designed for daily cooking. It uses a long countertop layout, practical sink and hob positioning, open shelving, and patterned Nyonya-style backsplash tiles to create a cheerful cooking environment.

The dry kitchen was designed with a cleaner and more modern look. Dark cabinet finishes, warm wood accents, pendant lights, and a breakfast table create a comfortable area for light meals and casual dining.

By separating the wet and dry kitchen functions, the home becomes more organised and easier to use. The wet kitchen supports heavier cooking, while the dry kitchen becomes a cleaner and more presentable area connected to the dining and living space.

Key Feature: Wet Kitchen with Nyonya-Style Backsplash Tiles

The wet kitchen backsplash uses Nyonya-style patterned tiles, giving the space a more lively and distinctive appearance. This design choice adds personality without compromising practicality.

The patterned backsplash works especially well in a wet kitchen because it creates a strong visual feature while protecting the wall surface behind the cooking and washing area.

Key Feature: Dry Kitchen with Breakfast Table

The dry kitchen includes a built-in breakfast table, designed for convenience and daily lifestyle use. It provides a practical area for light meals, drinks, preparation work, or casual gatherings.

This feature is especially useful for condominium living, where the kitchen and dining areas need to be planned efficiently.

Key Feature: BLUM Soft-Closing System

For this project, we used BLUM soft-closing hinges and BLUM soft-closing drawer systems. These fittings improve the user experience by making cabinet doors and drawers close more smoothly and quietly.

This is a practical upgrade for homeowners who want better durability, comfort, and a more premium kitchen feel.

Challenges

1. Separating Wet and Dry Kitchen Functions

The client needed both a functional wet kitchen and a presentable dry kitchen. The challenge was to make each area serve a different purpose while still keeping the overall home design consistent.

2. Making the Wet Kitchen Practical but Not Plain

Wet kitchens are often designed purely for function. The challenge was to make the space practical for daily cooking while still giving it character.

3. Creating a Dry Kitchen That Supports Daily Convenience

The dry kitchen needed to be more than a display area. It had to include useful storage, preparation space, and a breakfast table for everyday use.

4. Ensuring Smooth Cabinet Performance

Because kitchens are used frequently, the hardware and drawer systems needed to support long-term daily operation.

Solutions

1. Clear Wet and Dry Kitchen Planning

We planned the wet kitchen for heavier cooking and washing, while the dry kitchen was designed for light preparation, drinks, breakfast, and casual dining.

2. Nyonya-Style Tile Feature

The wet kitchen backsplash was finished with Nyonya-style tiles to make the space more lively and visually interesting. This prevents the wet kitchen from looking too basic.

3. Built-In Breakfast Table

The breakfast table was integrated into the dry kitchen layout to improve convenience and space usage. This gives the client an additional functional area without needing a separate loose counter.

4. BLUM Soft-Closing Hardware

We used BLUM soft-closing hinges and drawer systems to improve daily cabinet performance, reduce noise, and provide a more premium user experience.

5. Practical Storage Arrangement

Cabinet storage, open shelving, drawer zones, and countertop space were planned according to actual daily kitchen use, helping the client keep both kitchens more organised.
